Amber

Amber is ancient tree resin, light in the hand and warm to the touch. This collection holds natural Baltic amber pendants and amber bead bracelets. The pendants come in two colour families: honey amber, from pale cream yellow to translucent gold, and ombre amber that shades from yellow to dark red. Some hold botanical inclusions, golden discs or a crackle pattern, and each hangs on an adjustable cord in teal, brown or a dark tone. Many are one of a kind: the pendant in the photographs is the one you receive. The bracelets are natural golden flower amber in beads of about 9 to 10mm or 12mm, and white flower amber. Amber is traditionally associated with warmth and vitality; we describe that as tradition.

Material

Amber

Amber is fossil tree resin, tens of millions of years old, not a mineral. GrainMoon's amber is described in the source as natural Baltic amber, flower amber and floral amber; one pendant is described as old Baltic amber.

How to judge quality

By clarity and by what is inside: clouds, flower-like discs and botanical inclusions each have their followers, and none is a fault. Then by size, since large clean pieces are rare, and by colour, from pale cream yellow through honey to the deep red of ombre amber. Amber should feel warm and surprisingly light; that lightness is one of the honest signs of the real material.

Care

Amber is soft and scratches easily. Put it on last, after perfume, hairspray and lotion, and take it off first. Clean it with a barely damp soft cloth and dry it at once. Keep it away from alcohol, solvents, ultrasonic cleaners and long heat, including a hot car. Store it alone, not in a box with stone or metal.

Tradition

Amber is traditionally associated with warmth and vitality, and has been carried as a protective stone around the Baltic for centuries. The gourd shape, hulu, is a traditional blessing motif. Described as tradition.

Questions

How can I tell amber is genuine?

Genuine amber is light for its size, warm to the touch and never cold like glass, and it carries irregular internal patterns. Our pieces are described as natural amber in the source data; we do not perform our own laboratory tests.

Are the inclusions flaws?

No. Clouds, flakes and botanical inclusions are how the resin hardened. They make each pendant unlike any other.

Why do amber pieces say One of a kind?

Because the pendant in the photographs is the one that will be sent. Each is cut and polished individually and the stock is one.

What does "ombre blood amber" mean?

It describes the colour: transparent amber shading from yellow at the top to dark red below. It is a colour description, not a grade.

Will amber darken over time?

Amber slowly oxidises with light and air and can deepen in colour over many years. Storing it away from strong light slows that down.

Can it be repaired if it chips?

Polishing out a small scratch is sometimes possible; a chip usually is not. Email support@grainmoon.com and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth trying.
